We all have to sleep, but some people are better at it than others. Do you find yourself feeling envious of those people who turn up at work feeling chipper and upbeat? Those who find it easy to drop off at night and don’t wake up bleary-eyed and irritable? Perhaps you are someone who finds it difficult to drop off at night, or spends hours scrolling on social media under the covers when you should be snoozing.

If this sounds like you, it may be time for a change. Although you might enjoy being a night owl, and are happy to deal with early mornings by mainlining caffeine and being short with your coworkers. But this is not a healthy way to live. Lack of a proper sleep schedule can have huge impacts on all areas of your life from your physical health to your personal relationships. There are many great reasons to improve both quantity and quality of your sleep, as the following blog article will outline.

It has major health benefits

Sleep is essential for you to function properly. It allows your body to rest and recover from the stresses, leaving you to wake up stronger and fitter. It is also important for maintaining your immune system, cardiovascular health, metabolism, blood sugar control, and tissue repair. Without adequate sleep, all aspects of your physical health could be compromised, causing you to feel weaker and be more susceptible to all kinds of illnesses. For the sake of your wellbeing, get some more sleep!

It boosts your mental wellbeing

There’s a reason you feel worse after a night of bad rest. That’s because sleep is important for regulating your emotions, reducing stress, and balancing your moods. Improving your nightly routine will help you to feel less irritable in the mornings, lower your overall stress and anxiety levels, and make you feel generally happier.

It will improve your personal relationships

From friends to romantic partners, getting more sleep will make you more compassionate, attentive and present. You’ll understand this if you’ve ever snapped at a loved one when tired or cancelled plans because you didn’t have the energy. Your personal relationships will improve, and the people around will notice that you have become a better friend, relative, or partner.

It makes you more productive

When you are well rested, you are vastly more capable of focusing and getting work done. A lack of shuteye can reduce your attention span, memory, and cognitive function. This can impact everything from schoolwork to your career progression. Getting more sleep might just help you get the grades you need or land that important promotion at work. You will become more successful and it’s all thanks to getting better sleep.

It keeps you safe

Up to a fifth of all car accidents occur due to tiredness. Poor sleep can make you unsafe on the road, putting you and other drivers at risk. It can also impact your safety when carrying out manual work or engaging in sport. A proper sleep schedule will reduce your risk of injury and prolong your life.
