5 Common Causes of Accidents and How to Stay Safe

It’s not often we think about our own mortality, especially when we’re in the prime of life. However, it’s when an accident happens, that we realize just how fragile life is and how vulnerable our bodies can truly be. With that being said, here are five common causes of accidents and how to stay safe in 2025.

1. Slips and trips on wet or cluttered surfaces

    Slips and trips can happen anywhere, whether that’s in the workplace or at home. The risk of slipping or tripping up will increase if the surface you’re walking or running on is wet. It’s also dependent on how cluttered the surface is and how likely you are to trip over something that’s in the way.

    It can often be the smallest of slippery areas or clutter lying around that can do the most damage. So be sure to keep surfaces clear and avoid walking or running over wet surfaces.

    2. Falls from heights due to lack of safety measures

      A fall from a height can be pretty dangerous, especially if it’s a height that few would survive. Often with a fall from height, it’s due to a lack of safety measures in place. It’s important that you’re aware of your stability and security when looking up from a height. The last thing you want is to become unstable or lean on something that’s not secure.

      Falls from height are common but can be avoided if safety measures are followed and individuals are more aware of their surroundings. A stroke of bad luck can also be related to falls when it comes to being in something like a plane for example. With a recent increase in airplane crash disasters, it’s good to have help legally if you’re involved in an airplane accident.

      3. Defective equipment that has not been properly maintained

        This can often happen within a workplace but also in the home environment depending on the equipment in general. Defective equipment can often be the red flag you need to get the equipment fixed immediately before being used again. 

        There will likely be signs of defective equipment but it’s also important that you’re keeping up with maintenance where required so that the defect doesn’t happen at all.

        4. Manual handling injuries from improper lifting techniques

          The way you lift heavy items or even light items can have an impact on your bodily health. There’s a right way of lifting and a wrong way of lifting items. If you’re not lifting them correctly, you could do gradual or immediate damage to parts of your body and that can be impactful on your quality of life.

          Know the right methods when it comes to lifting techniques, especially for heavier objects.

          5. Distractions while operating machinery or driving

            It seems pretty obvious but if you’re distracted while operating machinery or driving, then chances are, you’re increasing your chances of an accident happening. These distractions happen more than you think, so it’s important to operate machinery or drive without those distractions present.

            Protecting yourself and avoiding the risk of injury is important to ensuring a long and healthy life.
