This week’s Fashion Friday question comes from Catherine.
I’ve got a very yellow sweater I would love some help with.
Here’s Catherine in her yellow sweater. Doesn’t she just look super springy? Even if she is in Colorado in the snow in April. I just love how versatile this sweater will be for chilly mornings or nights this spring and summer. You can wear it with everything–casual day at the playground, luncheons and brunches with friends or even to keep warm on a dressy date night.
So, I’m not a very yellow-person. Don’t get me wrong, I love yellow. Last year, I carried a yellow bag. And I have yellow pants and yellow shoes, but you will never see me with yellow by my face because it’s just so not my color. Like. At all. But Catherine can totally wear yellow. (And this is where I start making little jealous comments to myself.)
Colors that work with yellow
Yellow’s kind of tricky because it’s a bright, pastelish neutral. In other words… there’s a lot going on, but not too much either. So you can pair it with a lot. I’m a big yellow and blue fan, so I’d probably wear it with a light blue tank or a navy blue tank (and you can pair it with royal blue, too, but that’s a bit too much brightness for me.)
Nearly any color will work with yellow… pink, red, some greens (just nothing too yellow-green), purple, gray… I’d be weary of orange, though. And, as you see here, you can easily pair yellow with black or white. Probably the only thing I wouldn’t pair under it is something that has a lot of yellow… because yellow and yellow are hard to match.
Under the yellow cardigan
Because of the tighter sleeves, I’d stick with a tank or cami underneath. While solids will look great and classy, don’t be afraid to pair it with a pattern (like stripes or a geometric pattern.) I also wouldn’t go too loose-fitting because the sweater is meant to drape over, and you don’t need too many drapes.
The sweater is also perfect for pulling over a little black dress (or another color).
Accessories
The cardi is just screaming to be accessorized, don’t you think? Rather than a scarf, I’d put a statement necklace on that works with the neckline of whatever top you have under the cardigan. And, really, anything goes with the white top in that picture. I’m picturing something like these:
On the bottom
This will really depend on what your plans are for the day. This sweater works with everything… jeans, shorts, cute colored pants… even skirts and will look great with maxis. It’s all about putting it together, which I’ve done for you here to give you a few versatile, fun ideas for this spring (once the snow melts!)
