Transform Your Vacation Home on a Budget

Owning a vacation home is a cherished dream for many Americans. It’s a special place where families can escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life, reconnect with nature, and create lasting memories. Whether nestled in the mountains or perched by the sea, a vacation home is often more about its location than its interior. It comes as no surprise that the highest concentration of vacation homes is in the Marinette-Iron Mountain, the perfect spot for seasonal recreations all year around. Ultimately, when it comes to your second home, the stunning views, the fresh air, and the tranquility of the surroundings typically take center stage, leaving the decor as an afterthought. Yet, have you ever thought of your vacation home as a homely place? If the answer is no, you’re not the only one. Most Americans who have a second home see it as a recreational place where they can spend a few days away from their day-to-day stress. However, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere in your vacation home is crucial for enhancing your relaxation and enjoyment

Despite the scenic locations, the importance of having a well-decorated, comfortable interior cannot be overstated. A thoughtfully decorated space can make your vacation home feel like a true home away from home. It can also adapt to different seasons, making your stay delightful whether you’re basking in summer sunshine or cozying up by the fireplace in winter. Truth be told, every homeowner knows the cost of interior decoration. It’s not the kind of investment you may be ready to make for your second home. But what if it didn’t have to cost that much? Updating your decor doesn’t have to break the bank; with a bit of creativity and some DIY spirit, you can transform your space into a haven of comfort and style.

Making your own curtains

Homemade curtains are a fantastic way to bring a new level of coziness to your vacation home. They offer a personalized touch that store-bought options simply can’t match. Making your own curtains might sound daunting, but it’s an accessible project even for beginners. Here’s a simple guide to get you started:

  • Measure your windows: First, determine the size of your curtains. Measure the width and height of your window, adding a few extra inches on all sides for seam allowances and desired drapes. You also want to measure your curtain rod compared to the window. Here’s a brief guide on how to measure for curtain rods effectively.
  • Choose your fabric: Select a fabric that complements your vacation home’s aesthetic. Lightweight linens for a breezy beach house or heavy, insulating fabrics for a mountain retreat.
  • Cut and sew: Cut the fabric to size, including extra inches for hems. Use a sewing machine to sew the hems, creating neat edges. Attach curtain rings or sew a pocket for the curtain rod, and your custom curtains are ready to hang.

A set of towels and dish towels

Vacation homes often become repositories for secondhand items from primary residences. This can lead to a mishmash of decor that lacks intentionality. Investing in a set of towels specifically for your vacation home can make a significant difference. Fresh, coordinated towels add a touch of luxury and comfort.

Consider different styles and colors to match your vacation home’s vibe. For instance, opt for nautical-themed towels in blues and whites for a beach house, or earthy tones and rustic patterns for a mountain cabin. High-quality dish towels can also brighten up the kitchen and make daily chores more enjoyable.

Cushion covers

Another simple yet impactful DIY project is making your own cushion covers. This is an easy way to add a rustic feel and personality to your vacation home. Here’s how you can do it:

  • Measure your cushions: Note the dimensions of your cushions to determine how much fabric you’ll need.
  • Select fabric: Choose fabrics that align with the seasonal decor of your home. Light, floral prints for summer, and warm, cozy materials for winter, for example.
  • Sew the covers: Cut the fabric to size, allowing for seams. Sew three sides together, insert the cushion, and then sew or button the final side.

Making seasonal covers is a great way to refresh the look of your space throughout the year, adding charm and a welcoming atmosphere.

Intentional plates and bowls purchase

Rather than hauling plates and bowls from your primary home, consider purchasing a set specifically for your vacation home. This is a chance to select something unique that reflects the spirit of your getaway.

Choose vibrant, pop colors or interesting patterns that you wouldn’t normally go for. This small change can add a lot of character to your dining experience and contribute to a cohesive decor theme.

Upcycling furniture

Upcycling is a creative and cost-effective way to furnish your vacation home. It involves repurposing old materials and furniture into new, functional pieces. For instance, you can turn salvaged scaffolding into table legs or use an old door as a tabletop. Not only does upcycling save money, but it also allows you to create one-of-a-kind items that add a unique style to your decor.

Taking unwanted furniture for the vacation home

Transforming unwanted furniture from your primary residence can breathe new life into your vacation home. With some paint and creativity, old pieces can become focal points. Chalk paint, for instance, can be used to give furniture a chic, distressed look. Stencils can add decorative patterns, and bright colors can turn a set of dull chairs into an exciting and inviting dining room ensemble.

Making memories

Often, vacation homes lack the personal touches that make a house feel like home. Creating a family photo gallery is a wonderful way to add warmth and personality to your space. Frame photos from your family vacations and adventures, and arrange them on a prominent wall. This not only decorates the home but also serves as a constant reminder of cherished memories.

Updating the decor of your vacation home doesn’t have to be an expensive endeavor. With a bit of DIY spirit and thoughtful purchases, you can create a cozy, inviting space that enhances your getaway experience. From homemade curtains to upcycled furniture, these budget-friendly ideas will help you transform your vacation home into a stylish retreat that you’ll love returning to season after season.
