Is Your Home Ready For The Storm?

Ensuring that your home is ready for the summer heat is one thing you should definitely do, should you want to be able to efficiently and cost-effectively stay comfortable throughout the next few months. However, aside from the heat, the summer can bring the storm for a lot of us and, as such, it’s important to make sure that you’re ready for how dramatic the weather can get. The tips below can help with that.

Securing Windows and Doors

Strong winds can shatter windows and force open doors, allowing rain and debris to enter your home. Installing storm shutters provides a robust barrier against wind and flying objects. For an additional layer of protection, consider replacing standard windows with impact-resistant glass, which is designed to withstand severe impacts without breaking. Ensuring that doors are solid and equipped with high-quality locks and deadbolts will help prevent them from being forced open. Sealing any gaps around windows and doors with weatherstripping or caulk can also prevent water intrusion. Properly secured windows and doors will keep your home sealed and safe during a storm.

Clearing Gutters and Drains

Clogged gutters can cause water to overflow, leading to roof leaks, foundation issues, and water damage to walls and ceilings. Regularly cleaning your gutters and downspouts ensures that rainwater is directed away from your home efficiently. Additionally, inspect and clear any external drains to prevent water from pooling around your property. Installing gutter guards can help reduce the frequency of gutter cleaning by preventing leaves and debris from accumulating. Proper drainage management protects your home’s foundation and minimizes the risk of flooding during heavy rains.

Getting the Roof Checked

Regular roof inspections can identify vulnerabilities such as loose or missing shingles, cracks, or other damage that could allow water to penetrate during heavy rains. Hiring a professional roofer to check for and repair any issues will reinforce your roof’s integrity. If you find enough signs of damage or age, you may need to invest in a roof replacement. Additionally, consider installing storm-resistant roofing materials, which are designed to withstand high winds and heavy rainfall. Proper maintenance of your roof not only prevents leaks and water damage but also contributes significantly to the overall structural resilience of your home during a storm.

Trimming Trees and Securing Outdoor Items

Overhanging branches and weak or dead trees pose a threat during high winds, as they can break off and cause severe damage to your roof, windows, and walls. Regularly trimming trees and removing any hazardous limbs will minimize this risk. Additionally, securing or storing outdoor furniture, grills, and other loose items prevents them from becoming dangerous projectiles in strong winds. Anchor larger structures, such as sheds or playhouses, to the ground to ensure they remain stable. Taking these precautions helps protect your home and property from the destructive impact of flying debris and falling trees during a storm.

Stormy weather might be on the way and while it shouldn’t be a cause for concern for those who have adequately prepared, make sure that you and your family stay safe above all else.
