We all collect stuff that goes into our homes and some of it never sees the light of day again. That clutter is filling up our homes and potentially making our spaces smaller and less functional as a result.

For families in particular, the home can easily become cluttered and that doesn’t make living in the home as enjoyable as it could be. With that being said, there are definitely some secrets that can help you enjoy a clutter-free home going forward. Here are some helpful tips for decluttering every room.

Believe it’s doable and trust the process

Tackling a mammoth home full of clutter can feel like an impossible task, along with having to look after your kids, work, and do your day-to-day life admin too.

However, if you’re able to set aside some time and believe that you can do it, it’ll be more achievable.

Trusting the process is important when it comes to living in a clutter-free environment. While it might feel like an uphill climb from where you are now, with small and manageable steps, you’ll be able to overcome it eventually.

Create a decluttering timeline that works for your household

Every family household is different from the next and that includes how much time that household has available to do things like decluttering the entire property. With that being said, you want to create a decluttering timeline that works for your household.

Are you giving yourself a few weekends or a few months to declutter the space? What days work for you the best and what times do you think you could get the most of the decluttering done?

A decluttering timeline will be helpful to be realistic about what’s achievable and how much grace you’ll need to give yourself in order to get it all done.

Make use of containers for storage

In order to keep on top of the clutter, it’s worth sourcing the best storage solutions so that you stay on top of any belongings coming into the home and what you have currently.

Some households might find it beneficial to move excess belongings into a storage facility or unit so that they don’t have all of their possessions taking up room that could otherwise be utilized.

Keep the decluttering rules in mind

There are certain rules that can help you find success as a family when it comes to decluttering. Go by the 12/12/12 rule where you find 12 items to throw away, 12 to donate, and 12 to be put in storage that’s functional for the items themselves.

Be mindful of what you’ve used in recent times. Anything you’ve not used in years or can’t remember the last time you used it, might be something that want to throw out. A five-year rule is always a good rule to set in order to declutter items on a regular basis.

Slow down what you buy and accumulate

To help keep on top of the clutter going forward, try to slow down what you buy and therefore accumulate as a household. Be mindful of your purchases and if it’s not fulfilling your needs or joys, then it shouldn’t be purchased.

Follow these tips to enjoy a family home that’s clutter-free and easier to manage going forward in 2025.
