Tween fiction heroes

Yesterday, while completing a survey for work, I asked my 9-year-old what teen stars he looks up to? Tell me, I said, which teen stars do you think are amazing?

Without pause he replied, “Molly Moon, Percy Jackson andHarry Potter .”

I smiled. I smiled a really, really big smile. I know that at nine he’s still naive to the pressure of keeping up with the stars and looking to them as the ones he most wants to be like. But to hear a nine-year-old boy immediately think of the teens he reads as those he idolizes, that’s pretty amazing.

True, all three of his idols have inhuman talents: Molly’s a hypnotist, Percy’s a demi-god and Harry is a wizard, but all three have many similar qualities that I hope my son aspires to:

  • they’re team players
  • they’re leaders and respected for the decisions they make
  • they fight hard for things to be better
  • they outsmart demons and adults, proving that kids can do anything (especially with magical powers)
  • they’re not afraid to ask questions
  • they learn from their mistakes
  • they recognize the good in others and always take that into consideration

It’s not bad to have such powerful role models in your life, is it?

  1. Ahh!! My daughter thanks you!! I got her some *not so appropriate* youth books for Christmas (Dumb Mom Move) and so THANKFULLY I read them first and once I figured out they weren’t appropriate I had to give her a gift card for her to replace them. Ha. She’s read almost all of the HP and PJ books, but I’ve never heard of Molly Moon…so we have something new!!

  2. Oh! Audrey hasn’t read Molly Moon’s yet. Totally recommending it to her today!

  3. I’m going to look into Molly Moon for my son! He is just starting to really get into reading, it’s sort of thrilling!!

  4. I wish that my daughter read that much. It drives me batty, I LOVE reading and she hates it. She has been reading The Lovely Bones on her new Kindle – that I bought her because she wanted to read more – for over a month. This is the first novel that she is reading of her own free will. LOL

    • All it takes is getting hooked once to finally “get” it. And some people don’t get it til MUCH later. But, someday, she’ll find a book that she LOVES and will suddenly realize that the right book makes her love reading.

  5. I can’t wait for the day my oldest (8) starts to enjoy reading. It’s been a struggle so far but I know once he overcomes that he will be a book lover. I have the Percy Jackson book on my list to read with him over the summer.

    • That’s such a common comment, Shana. I hear it a lot. Sometimes it’s that the kids just aren’t at the point of comprehending enough to really get into books, other times it’s because they haven’t experienced a book yet that’s made them WOW and suddenly live for reading. It all happens… in time.

  6. Hooray! Thank you! :)

  7. Thanks for the recommendation! Amazingly, I’ve never heard of Molly Moon. I’ll have to try it out with my kids!
