Student midyear review: The Self Evaluation Process (goal setting with FREE printables)

how to set goals for improvement at school

After a break from school, students of all ages should look back over the past several months of learning and evaluate their growth. This family-opportunity for discussion can easily occur over a shared meal, a drive in the car, or several snack breaks. Guided by parents with the right questions, students will be led to further goals that will increase their effort, eventually helping them to reassess, re-evaulate, feel confident in their growth and success and, finally, develop new goals. Bedwetting: how do we know it's time to go diaperless?

I made a mistake this afternoon, and I'm sitting on my couch, wondering what the outcome will be. I put Little to bed for her nap in underpants, rather than a pull-up or diaper. Little has been potty trained for about a month. She hasn't had an accident in two weeks. And she's woken up dry at least 3 nights in a row. I put her on the potty right before her nap. And then I put her panties on, did our kisses bedtime routine, sang her a song and put her in bed. I walked out the door, closed it … [Read more...]

5 things to tell your kids when they have night time accidents (or wet the bed)

This summer, I've been talking a lot about bed wetting and night time accidents, as well as other areas of toddler and preschooler development. Moms often ask me, "what do I do when ____?"  It's important to remain positive . Don't tell them they did something wrong or that it's their fault. That's the  number one rule, because you don't want them to feel that they failed at something they simply have no control over. So. What do you do? Here, 5 things to tell your kids when they wake up … [Read more...]

Developing positive responses to not so positive episodes

It's so easy to take something away, right? If a child does something you don't want to encourage, or against the rules, how nice and easy is it to say "Oh! You did that again! That's it! You lose a point." And then the kid gets sad and more upset because not only did he fail you in doing something wrong, but he is now being punished. What good did taking away the point do, really? It's not that negative behavior needs to be ignored, not at all. There's a time, a place and, certainly, episodes … [Read more...]

The summer slide, is it something to fear?

There's always this big, scary fear for parents at this time of year. It's the OMG what if my kid forgets everything he learned over the past 9 months?! What if he goes back to school in the fall and he's at the bottom of the class? What if he's one of the kids that is the cause of the curriculum re-teaching the whole last year in the first month of school? Well, let's hit reality folks. The summer slide exists. But it's pretty rare that a family that cares enough to worry about it will suffer … [Read more...]

Nighttime Accidents: There's nothing wrong with your child

Through this summer, I'd like to open a conversation about something that so many don't usually talk about: children having nighttime accidents, or bed wetting. It's another one of those hush hush topics: a child is so perfectly potty trained, except that 4 nights a week, he wakes up wet. The last thing you want to do is make him wear a diaper to bed. He's potty trained, for goodness sake! You've already celebrated! Well, it happens. A lot. Probably more than we know, and more than your friends … [Read more...]
