Amwell: Consulting with the Doctor inside My Computer

Busy much? That’s my anthem. There’s rarely a day that I’m not running around with a zillion things on my lists so I’m sure you know that there’s just no time for a sick day, for me or the kids. Even worse? Making the time to actually go to the doctor. I love our doctors, especially our pediatrician group, but it’s a twenty minute drive there and back and the average appointment lasts another 20 minutes. What mom has an hour free to run to the doctor just to get a confirmation on what her gut is telling her?

with Amwell, I was able to connect quickly with a doctor and get all the help I needed at home, on my schedule

I was so excited to experience Amwell and participate in this sponsored campaign with the nation’s largest telehealth company.

Using Amwell is a big step for any family. We all vetted our doctors when our kids were born and, some of us, researched again and changed doctors when we didn’t feel the connection we’d expected the first time around. So I wanted to know if it was worth trading the comfort and security of visiting doctors who know our family well, for a doctor on my iPad.

As a part of this campaign, I connected with a doctor to discuss for a consultation on one of my children that I haven’t had a chance to ask the doctor and that have been hot on my mind. Note that doctor needs to have the patient in the room with you so that she or he can consult directly with the patient.

Amwell -- the ease of a doctor inside your computer

I played around on the site first, getting an understanding of the doctors that are available. After you sign on, you’re presented with doctors who are available and certified in your state. You can read a bio for each doctor, and watch a video of many. The video feature is a favorite, I can make sure we’ll understand each other, and, when I’m with one of my kids, we can search to find a doctor whose voice and smile he or she will feel comfortable talking with.

I also enjoyed reading the doctor’s bios. It was important to me to find someone we would identify with. As you scroll down the bio, you’ll find doctor affiliations and “other clinical interests.” I found this area to be very helpful in identifying a doctor to talk approach with my questions.

Amwell-- when choosing a doctor to visit, view her bio and her video to be certain you'll connect. I really appreciate the listings of other clinical interests

Not all of the doctors are available all the time, so if you need someone right away, you’ll have to select from those available. You can also sign on to wait to see a specific doctor or come back later if you have a favorite doctor who isn’t currently available.

Once you select your doctor, the site prompts you to answer a few health history questions and attach your insurance information (not required). This is where you’ll be prompted to enter the coupon code provided for Julieverse readers, BEWELL3, for your free first visit.

After completing payment (or coupon code), you’ll download an HD Video Client and be on your way into the doctor appointment.

The conversation was friendly and easy. The doctor asked me a lot of personal, background questions. She had the time to listen and allowed me to answer any questions (something that, sadly, I’ve heard parents complain that not all doctors do.) I was also able to voice my concerns and the back and forth was natural.

We did have a technical problem where our video screen froze and the doctor immediately called my cell phone (I provided the number while signing up) to continue our conversation.

For convenience, I’m sold. What usually takes over an hour, took us about 15 minutes. And the diagnosis reaffirmed that my gut was correct. It amazes me how well we were able to connect and get straight to the problem and the needs in our very focused conversation.

About Amwell

with Amwell, you can see a doctor at a time and place that's right for you

Amwell is the nation’s largest telehealth company, connecting users with board-certified, licensed doctors, dieticians and psychologists for immediate and live, online visits—day or night, on either mobile or desktop.

Some general conditions Amwell doctors encounter include: minor illnesses and injuries, general health and wellness concerns, prescription refills, and chronic condition management. Amwell employs primary care, specialist physicians, licensed behavioral therapists and registered dietitians to meet patients’ health and wellness needs.

Amwell doctors are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and are dedicated to keeping you healthy – all from the comfort of your home. Which, to me, is the biggest perk. There’s no longer a need to wait 8 hours for the doctor to check someone’s breathing.

How I’ll use Amwell in the future

I’m not going to stop using my family’s doctors. I see the personal relationships we have as essential to our growth. But for hectic days when I’m pretty sure of the answer (like every October when I know I’ve come down with Bronchitis), I’m comfortable jumping online and chatting with an Amwell doc.

I also can see using Amwell when we travel. We’ve experienced several vacations that included trips to Urgent Care facilities (I joke that in most states, Maine to Florida, we can refer you to an Urgent Care facility.) I feel a hundred times prepared for our next trip, knowing I can hop onto my PC or iPad and connect with a doctor at Amwell, no appointment needed.

How do you use it?

Amwell is accessible from both your home computer and your handheld devices via apps. Simply log-in, choose the type of visit you’re looking for and select a provider. Depending on your issue, the doctor can diagnose, suggest a follow-up and prescribe, when appropriate.

They also have an excellent blog that covers family health and wellness.

Insurance, Cost, HIPAA and Availability

Amwell takes your privacy very seriously. Your visit with the doctor is secure and HIPAA compliant. Amwell is accepted by many major insurers, with more added every day. Enter your health insurance information for a lower cost visit. Amwell doctor visits are now available in 46 states.

Costs for Amwell varies by your plan and your needs. Therapy costs $95 or less, Physicians are $49 or less and Dieticians cost just $25 or less.

I like that you are not using the app as an alternative to your traditional doctor, but rather has a helper. I agree life can become hectic and busy very quickly and unfortunately there may not be enough time to pay a visit to the family doctor!

I love knowing that I can log on and have my mid-February sinus infection treated without having to go sit in a doctor’s office filled with patients who have the flu. I’m always worried I’ll wind up with something much worse.

The fact that I’m taking my daughter to the doctor’s office this afternoon is definitely weighing on me… It would be SO much easier to see a doctor on our screens. Sadly… insurance gets in the way of ease today.
