It’s time we get *in* the picture

About 11 years ago, as a typical Tuesday or Thursday morning story hour at Barnes & Noble ended, a friend took out her flip phone and quickly snapped a picture of her 10 month old, sending it to her mom. “I promised I’d take a picture of him every day and send it to Mom so she can see him grow up.”

“Every day?” I asked, wondering how much room she had on that small silver bullet while making a mental note that it may be time to upgrade my cellular phone to one with a camera.

She nodded. “She doesn’t want to miss a thing while living so many states away.” Huh. I bet my mom wouldn’t want to miss a thing either, I thought. But every day?

A flip phone, 2 Android phones, a Windows phone, and 3 iPhones later, I still don’t take pictures and send them to my mom daily, but I’m sharing a lot more. And with the endless opportunities to share via Social Media, it’s simple for my mom to see all the photos of the kids she wants to see.

But, what about pictures of me?

While scrolling through pictures on my iPhone, recently, I realized I’m not too often in the picture. Sure, I can take a selfie, especially in the mirror in a dressing room at Nordstrom, but the pictures of the real moments, the moments I want to keep close, the adorable moments… I’m usually behind the camera.

It’s time for Moms to get in the picture

And Sprout, sponsor of the Mom is Here campaign and this post, agrees. It’s time to get infront of the camera. To take selfies with the kids and to hand off the camera or phone to a friend or, gasp!, friendly, safe stranger and ask them to take a picture of all of you. Looking back on your pictures, wouldn’t it be a lot more special to see everyone in the picture–even Mom?!

The Mom is Here promotion invites moms to take pictures with the family and submit them to their website by uploading an image, or submit via instagram by including the hashtag #MomIsHere. It’s that simple to include yourself in your photo-memories. A few of my recent #MomisHere moments are included in this post.
