What is Vine?

I’m seeing Vine all over my facebook page this week. People joining and shouting find me! follow me! and others saying what is Vine? Do I need to do it? Why?

what is vine

Vine is an iPhone app that’s owned by twitter and it has a lot of potential–especially in retail, conventions, product development and the arts and cooking. I joined yesterday, played with it for a bit and learned a lot. I’m having a lot of fun checking out friends’ 6-second split (or stop) video, but I’m not sure how I’ll use it in my work. Time will tell as I play a bit more.

Here’s my video answering What is Vine?

It’s also true that there are, ahem, man-parts and porn on this app. According to Macleans.ca, Vine and twitter are doing what they can to block the hashtag sharing, but, as with the rest of the internet and social media, if one is looking for something, they’ll find it. So, don’t look. Plain and simple. As for kids using it, it’s a fun app and very creative. Because kids are supposed to be 13 to use twitter, they should also be 13 to use Vine. And 13 is certainly old and mature enough to discuss the things you shouldn’t do on the internet with your kids. As always, monitor what your kids are viewing and doing with all forms of technology.

Check out the Vine Blog for examples of what you’ll find on Vine, as well as who to follow.

  1. Thanks for the tips! I don’t want to be a curmudgeon but the whole idea just exhausts me!

    • That’s how I felt. But then Whitney (Mommies with Style) pointed out that getting in early is always a good thing, so I went ahead, joined and played a bit. Honestly, I don’t see how it will help bloggers very much. But it’s definitely fun.

  2. I’ve heard the talk about it as well….and I think for now I don’t need Vine. Nor do I want it. I already have enough social media to worry about. :)

  3. I just found Vine last week from a tweet by Jessica Sienfield (so random). She made coffee using coconut oil as creamer. Who knew! I was obsessed for 10 mins and then lost interest. It takes a little practice but it’s really cool. Reminds me of Esther’s app Glimps. What happened to that one?

Great video explaining this to newbies. I think I am following you on Vine.

    • Yeah, pretty sure we’re following each other. I’ve only made the one Vine. I want to see if anything comes of it, and it is fun,but I’m not moved to use it much, yet. We shall see.

I think Glmps is still out there but no one ever talks about it. I thought the same as you–very similar app.
