Allergies and eating restrictions can make it so that many kids don’t get to enjoy life’s simple pleasures, like milkshakes and smoothies. I’ve always taken for granted that I could easily have a milkshake anytime, but having a child with a Lactose-Intollerance has opened my eyes. The amazing Roo from Nice Girl Notes‘ children have stronger allergies than my kids, and she’s created smoothie recipes her kids can enjoy and I can’t wait to try. (I especially love the alternative that sneaks in spinach!)
Ingredients
- one bag frozen strawberries
- one can coconut milk OR orange juice
- agave nectar or honey to taste
- one tablespoon chia seeds
- other variation:
- one bag frozen mixed berries
- one half cup frozen spinach (the berries hide the green!)
- one can coconut milk
- agave nectar or honey to taste
- one tablespoon chia seeds

- So easy! Grab your blender, throw everything in and blend! If you'd rather make a single serving, just eyeball the amount of each item you need.
Not only is she an entertaining, super-fun writer (really. Want to laugh? Go to Nice Girl Notes) but Roo Ciambriello is one of the sweetest, most giving ladies I know. This picture is her adorable daughter, sipping on her smoothie. Thanks for the recipe, Roo!

Wow! Kids eat spinach. I had no clue! But joking aside, aren’t most smoothie gluten free??

depends on what you use. Some yogurts and ice creams have gluten, others don’t. I know we use yogurt a lot in smoothies and I never pay attention to whether they have gluten unless Kelly or Jo-Lynne is over.

These are great. One little tip, if you can try first without the honey or agave you get even more bang for your buck because they’re sugar free. It may not work with the spinach one, but my kids are fine with fruit smoothies sans added sweetner so I can attest it works.;)

oh, it does work, but we like our’s a little sweeter to make it a bit more of a snack. My favorite smoothie recipe includes maple syrup.
However, I have made smoothies with just frozen fruit in the past. the problem is, the kids want something more exciting than a puree.

We love smoothies in our house. I mainly do it with apple juice and tons of fruit but every once in a while do it with yogurt and milk. Never thought to use coconut milk.
