Amazon's hottest toys

Last year, I reported Amazon’s top selling toys each Sunday night. It was great fun to share the hottest toys of the season with readers and hear feedback and thoughts from you all, as well as watch to see how things changed through the season.

As the first Sunday night of the Christmas shopping season is about to close, here’s Amazon’s reported list of top toys, effective 11:50 pm EST, Sunday, November 27 with, of course, my commentary.

Angry Birds: Knock On Wood Game Middle (age 6) has, and loves, this game (thanks to our good friend @Shannon_Ott for the birthday present–it was perfect!). The pieces are true-to-the-game and it brings the elements of trajectory, angles and power that you love from the Angry Birds app to real life. A must-have game for any angry birds fan, it’s very easy to see why this game is listed as the number one buy tonight. Currently retailing for $32.95.

Hedbanz GameI’m going to be honest with you, I have no idea why this game is on the list, again, this year. It was in the top 5, off and on, all last December and I am surprised to see it at number 2 yet again this year. I have never tried this game, but, to me, it seems like a game we could easily make by hand using 3×5 cards, a marker and a piece of elastic. I must be missing something because it remains an extremely popular gift. Maybe someone will gift it to my kids and we’ll learn what makes it so fabulous. Currently retailing for $14.72.

I purchased Rory’s Story Cubes last week, so I’m a part of the influence that makes this game number 3 on the list tonight. At only $6.86, the game is a bargain and the idea of the game is priceless. Roll the dice and make a story based on the pictures that come up. The possibilities are endless. Make any teacher’s day by gifting this to her, or get a set of dice for your family for endless story telling adventure. (Can you tell I like this one?)

I really feel like I am the only education blogger who hasn’t received a LeapFrog LeapPad Explorer Learning Tablet (Green) to sample and tell you about it, but I would love to. I see such benefit in this toy as a great learning opportunity, as well as a chance to get my toys back from the kids. Not a surprise that this Leap Frog product is in the top 5 this evening.

Rounding out the Top 5 this evening is a toy my boys will probably have on their lists as soon as they know about it: Transformers: Dark of the Moon – Ultimate Optimus Prime. It’s an ultimate boy-toy, the epitome of Transformers. I’ve heard, though, that, like many Transformer toys, it’s fragile which means frustrating for Moms, so beware. Retailing for $54.99 at amazon this evening, which is a $35 savings off MSRP.

Rounding out the top 10:

SPY NET: Stealth Video Glasses
FIJIT Friends Willa Interactive Toy
LeapFrog App Center Download Card (works with LeapPad & Leapster Explorer)
Air Swimmer Remote Control Inflatable Flying Shark
Angry Birds 5″ Plush Red Bird with Sound

What do you think? Are these toys and games deserving of the top toys for Christmas early in the season? What’s been left off the list that should be there? Which toys will we see repeat throughout the next month? Check back next Sunday night for an update.
