March 2 is Read Across America Day

Tomorrow is Dr. Seuss’ birthday, which is celebrated nation-wide as Read Across America Day. The National Education Association earmarked March 2 as a day to remind everyone about the joy of reading, and, more specifically, about the joy of reading to children. While schools, libraries and community centers will celebrate with special readings and activities. The goal of Read Across America:

On March 2, the National Education Association calls for every child to be reading in the company of a caring adult.

Several websites and organizations have joined in the celebration. Seussville offers games and activities based on Dr. Seuss’ books and emphasizing reading and Reading Rockets offers supports for parents, to help them enjoy reading with children as well as learning and teaching tips for the children.

Looking for great books for your kids? Last year I created this must-have list for creating a beginning library for children. Every book on this list should be in the house of a young child.

Check in tomorrow when we share our Read Across America activity.

What will you do to celebrate reading with your family tomorrow?
